As an additional barrier to assist in reducing the spread of COVID-19, fask masks or face coverings are a good measure to put in place.
Although they may not be mandatory in all locations it is recommended to wear a mask when in public if you are unable to abide by physical distancing requirements.
Here are some tips to assist you in wearing and disposing of a face mask effectively.
How to put on your mask safely
- Before touching the mask, wash your hands for a minimum of 20 seconds with soapy water, or use a hand sanitiser that is contains 60 percent alcohol or more.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth at all times
During use
- Do not touch the front of your mask while you are wearing it.
- If you do touch the mask ensure that you wash or sanitise your hands immediately.
- Do not allow the mask to hang around your neck, this includes when eating and drinking.
- Do not allow the mask to sit under your nose.
After use
- When removing the mask use the ties or ear loops.
- Ensure that you don't touch the front of your mask while removing it.
- Place your mask somewhere safe to keep it clean, such as your pocket, purse, or paper bag if you are taking it off to eat or drink outside of your home.
- Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or use hand sanitiser that is made up of over 60 per cent alcohol before placing your mask back on again.
- Single-use masks should not be re-used, and should be thrown away after each use.
- Do not dispose of masks into a recycling bin. Snip the loops off of the mask and dispose in a bag or lined bin.
It is not a requirement that under 12 year old children wear masks, as they may not be able to handle them safely.
Masks or face coverings should NOT be worn by children under the age of 2 or anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
Please be respectful to others as reasons for not wearing a mask are not always obvious.
